Alsace, the French region that knows the most about Christmas traditions

Alsace France Christmas

The border region of Alsacia has had a strong influence on how it is celebrated Christmas in France and also in the world (the Christmas tree tradition was born there). Christmas markets have a long tradition in Alsace, and the proximity to Germany has given their festivals a unique German touch that is highly appreciated in France. The Alsace holiday scene is perfect: Norman-style houses, abundance of Christmas lights, classical concerts in local churches, many typical Christmas dishes and sweets, all combined to offer the visitor a magical and unforgettable experience.

The Alsace region offers a real itinerary of activities and entertainment during the holidays, especially with its typical Christmas markets, which can be visited in a three or four day excursion, since their distances are short. Among the most interesting markets in the region are the one in Strasbourg, the oldest in the country, dating from 1570, as well as the markets in the towns of Colmar and Mulhouse, which attract thousands of tourists every year-end. Such is the attachment to the festivities in this region that in the small town of Riquewirh there is a Christmas shop that is open throughout the year.
