Florence, a city full of art

Florence

This is another city that I have on the list of future trips, and that I still don't know whether to put before or after Rome, since this is more important, but in Florence there is a great deal of art on the street, in buildings and in museums. There is so much history that in a single trip we will surely leave many visits to do.

We will try look for all those essentials What to see if you visit Florence, since we know that not everyone can spend a month in a city to see it in detail. There are always things that should not be missed, in case we do not have the opportunity to return to this beautiful city that seems to have stagnated in the XNUMXth century. Are you joining the tour?

Details of the trip

As Florence is in Italy, residents of the European Union will only need a DNI to move around it. The euro is also the official currency, and the schedule is the same as in Spain, so the changes will be minimal. There are not many preparations to make for the trip, since the weather is also usually good. The best months to visit Florence are those of spring and fall, because in the middle of summer the heat can become suffocating for those who are not used to it. To move around the city you can use the bus lines, and also the Agile Charter, of 10 and 21 trips, which can also be shared among several people, to get the most out of it.

Piazza del Duomo

Florence

This must be the start of the trip to Florence, the most famous square, which was the religious and spiritual center of the city. In it you can see the Cathedral of Santa Maria de las Flores, with its famous bell tower or Giotto's Campanile, as well as the Battisterio di San Giovanni, the oldest building in the city. They are all spectacular, both inside and out, so a visit is required to see their rich interiors. In this square there is also the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, where are the original statues that used to decorate the square.

La Florence Cathedral It was completed in the XNUMXth century, and it contains the tomb of Brunelleschi, the Italian architect who created this huge dome, which distinguishes this cathedral from any other. It was his greatest challenge, to which he devoted many years, and the interior of this dome is also lavishly decorated with painted scenes of the Last Judgment. You can visit the inside and see the city from above. The Campanile is the bell tower, which you can also climb to enjoy views of the city.

Finally, in this square we can see the Battistry, a very old building in the same style as other monuments in Florence, with an exterior in white and green marble. Inside we can see a beautiful Byzantine mosaic on the dome, which stands out for its golden tones.

Ponte Vecchio or the Old Bridge

Florence

This is definitely the image that is best known of the city, the one that represents her around the world. It was created in the 1345 century, and it was the only one that survived World War II intact. It stands out for those hanging houses, in which today there are jewelers and goldsmiths, following the artisan tradition of the city. In it there is also the Vasari Corridor, which runs from the Palazzo Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti. In addition, you can see many padlocks hanging on the bridge, which are left by couples as a sign of their love.

Florence museums

Florence

La Uffizzi Gallery It is the most visited museum in the city, not in vain it has one of the most famous painting collections in the world, where of course the paintings of the great Italian Renaissance artists stand out. It has works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian. These works are arranged in chronological order, and the museum has a very simple structure, so that it is easy to visit. However, it must be taken into account that there are usually large queues, so the best way to avoid them is by booking a guided tour or by reserving tickets online.

On the other hand, we have the Accademia Gallery, which is also a must-see in the city. This gallery is the second most visited because it houses the most famous statue of Michelangelo, the David. It is a spectacular statue, in white marble 5,17 meters high. Although it was exhibited in the Piazza della Signoria, in 1873 it was moved inside the gallery to protect it from the wear and tear of meteorological phenomena. In this gallery there are also other rooms where you can see sculptures and various religious paintings.

For the curious, the Museo galileo, where scientific inventions from the Renaissance are kept. One of its most important pieces is the Galileo telescope, and this can be an interesting visit for those who love science and history.
