Declared a historical-artistic complex since 1982, Alcalá del Júcar is one of the most beautiful municipalities in Spain. It is a medieval town located in the La Manchuela region just 60 kilometers away from Albacete capital and surrounded by a spectacular natural environment. It is not surprising, therefore, that it is one of the rural destinations preferred by travelers in Castilla la Mancha.

What to see in Alcalá del Júcar?

Castle

Alcalá de Júcar stands on a rock in a meander of the river. Their houses climb over it and go up to the Castle that presides over it all. Always visible from all angles we are facing a fortress of Arab origin that dates from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries approximately. After successive later reforms, little remains of its Almohad beginnings today, but its image remains imposing.

Given its privileged location, the best way to get a panoramic view of all of Alcalá del Júcar is undoubtedly from its castle. It can be visited throughout the year.

Church of San Andrés

Another of the most significant buildings in Alcalá del Júcar is the church of San Andrés. We are facing a single and elongated nave construction built between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. It presents architectural elements from various construction periods and the 70th-century rib vault with terceletes and the XNUMX-meter high tower are striking. In the XNUMXth century the chevet was expanded with a transept and a dome.

Roman bridge and Júcar river beach

The most emblematic image of Alcalá del Júcar is obtained right at this point. It is not really a true Roman bridge since it dates from the XNUMXth century but it is called that because of its appearance. This place not only has an incredible panoramic view of the castle, but locals and visitors, during the hot summer, can cool off in an area enabled for swimming on the bank of the river Júcar, which is known as a fluvial beach.

The caves

Although it may not seem like it, the hill on which Alcalá del Júcar stands is perforated because over the centuries tunnels and houses have been excavated, some reaching a good state of conservation to this day. These caves have been used as stables, natural pharmacies, and bird nests. The most famous are the Masagó cave and the Devil's cave, today enabled as a bar and restaurant.

Museum of cinema

The current headquarters of the Alcalá del Júcar film museum is the old town cinema. It may not be an essential thing to see in this town but it is a curious visit. The building preserves several rows of armchairs, the projector, the bar counter and a host of other objects like an ethnographic museum. Your visit is included with the same entrance to the caves.

Hermitage of San Lorenzo

The hermitage of San Lorenzo is a characteristic Baroque work with a cross plan, cupola and paintings from the XNUMXth century.

Bullring

It is one of the oldest bullrings in Spain. It stands out above the others for its originality because the unevenness of the land on which it sits is what has led to a completely irregular and unique construction with the steps excavated in the stone and its oval shape.. At present the bullring serves as a bullring and municipal theater.

Surroundings of Alcalá del Júcar

Nature lovers will also find Alcalá del Júcar the ideal destination to enjoy outdoor activities. Some of the most interesting plans to do in its surroundings are hiking or paddle surfing. This Castilian La Mancha town is a very good option for practicing water sports.
