Amber, souvenir from Prague

There are many typical things that we can buy as souvenirs of our trip to Prague: the delicate glass of Bohemia, the classic wooden puppets, a bottle of the traditional Becherovka ... However, if you are looking for a special and beautiful souvenir, what you have to buy is some jewel made with amber.

Since ancient times there has been a trade route in Central Europe through which amber from the Baltic Sea travels south, to the old workshops of the cities on the banks of the Danube and its peripheral regions. In medieval times the goldsmiths of the Czech capital became true masters when setting these precious orange and green stones in earrings, rings, tiaras, necklaces and all kinds of ornaments.

Today we can find amber (there are two varieties: yellow and green) not only in the jewelers of the Jewish neighborhood, but in almost all the shops of the old city of Prague and, when it comes to Christmas, also in the many stalls that are installed in Starometské Namesti and vicinity.

There are even some workshops where you can observe the process of making these wonders, from the selection and carving of resins to polishing and final setting in pieces made of precious metals. Take home an amber and you will preserve the magic of your trip to Prague forever.
