calanques-de-provence

It is a geographic and historical region that is southeast of France. It borders the Mediterranean Sea and its landscapes are also decorated with mountains. Although it has belonged to France for more than five centuries, the region retains its cultural individuality and even its own dialect.

The Massif of the Creeks, commonly called Creeks to dry, it is something very distinctive of the Provencal coast. It is a line of about 20 kilometers long and about four wide, decorated with fjords, cliffs and beaches that goes from Marseille to Cassis.

Un cove is what remains of an ancient river formed millions of years ago and that with the glaciations and the melting of the glaciers it ended up forming a deep valley that in the end the sea flooded.

There are many calanques but some are more popular than others. Some are perfect for families, others for couples and others for water sports. Some have been modified by man, others remain rougher, some have pebbles and others more sand.

Calanque D'En Vau,

Its geography is fragile so the government controls the traffic of cars. Much more since they suffered an arson in September 2016 that devastated 3500 hectares of land. Some schedules must be respected and there are paid parking areas.

Motorcycles are not allowed either. Otherwise, you have to walk so it is something to keep in mind if you plan to visit them. Summer is the high season so the control is firmer. Of course, if you don't have dinner early, you're in luck because the French start leaving the beaches between 5 and 6 in the afternoon, so there is still sun and if you go later you will have more space to enjoy the beaches.

If you go in winter it will be easier to get around by car but consider that there is a lot of wind and fewer hours of sun. Forever it is possible to take a tour of the calanques by boat from Marseille, thus several are known, but today we have to talk about one of the most beautiful: the Calanques d'En-Vau.

Precisely due to its topography access on foot to D'En-Vau and its neighbors is restricted by law between June 1 and September 30. It is always possible to arrive by boat but not by car and on foot.

A scale of three levels of risk is usually established: orange when access is authorized, red when it is only possible between 6 am and 11 am and black when it is definitely not possible to enter. It all depends on the weather.

Consider that There are no restaurants or taverns around here and that the sun, in summer, hits very hard. And if the Mistral blows, I won't even tell you. Capable of flying. For this reason, even when access is authorized, the walk is not advisable.

Along with the calanques of Port Miou and Port Pin D'En-Vau has been declared a National Park in April 2012 so there are restrictions on hunting, fishing and car traffic. While Port Miou has Roman origins, it was one of its great ports, Port Pin is tiny and with emerald green waters.

In Vau, meanwhile it has beautiful turquoise waters and it is closer to Marseille although of the three is the most difficult to access. One of the routes is from the La Gardiole forest and the other from Port Miou or from the Port Pin calanque, but It is about an hour and a half of walking. The landscapes that you discover are worth the long walk.

You can also get there on foot from the Fontanesse parking lot, crossing a narrow and steep canyon three kilometers long.

If you do not want to get rid of the car much and you can circulate, it is possible to do part of the trip to En Vau following the Gineste route between Cassis and Marseille, although you must do the last part of the way on foot. And when leaving the car, do not leave things inside because in summer at least there are usually thefts.

If you don't have a car you can get to port meow by bus from Cassis. There's a tourist service It works in the evenings between the beginning of July and the beginning of September. It is a minibus with capacity for only eight passengers and it works every 15 minutes until midnight. Tickets can be purchased above the vehicle.

The truth is that this cove owns some of the highest cliffs on the coast so it's awesome. If you go in summer then the advice is to go early in the morning to avoid the mass of tourists. And if you go out of season, like June or September, then better.

Its geography is very rocky and steep so rock climbing lovers love it. It has a small beach, so it is advisable to arrive early and stay with a good site. Don't let the walk scare you, it's worth it. Of course, try to wear comfortable shoes, no flip-flops or sandals because I really walk through steep and rocky trails, and they are not well marked.

Bringing water is essential, the same is a hat, a snack and the desire to walk. You have to know that they are at least two hours one way and the same back so it easily becomes the only thing you will do that day.
