Castle of Sully-sur-Loire, the mysterious medieval fortress on the banks of the Loire

Castle Sully Loire

El Castle of Sully-sur-Loire (Château de Sully-sur-Loire) is an old medieval fortress built towards the end of the 7th century, which was later converted into a sumptuous manor residence. The Castle of Sully is located on the left bank of the Loire River, in the municipality of Sully-sur-Loire, in the central Loire region, and only XNUMX kilometers east of the town of St-Benoît. This authentic fortress still stands out with its unique bearing, which is reflected in its impressive tower, its tall conical watchtowers and its walkway. It originally served as the residence of the Dukes of Sully, who had settled here since the XNUMXth century.

Inside you can see in the apartments of the Duke of Sully and his wife all the grandeur and magnificence that was reflected in medieval buildings. The castle still preserves a gallery of family portraits, the tomb of the duke and his wife, the hall of honor, the king's chamber and the remarkable seventeenth-century chambers, called Psyche. This remarkable medieval fortress was listed as a Historical Monument by the French state in 1928, and is part of the castles of the Loire included as Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2000.
