Years ago it was a natural area that was rarely visited, which gave it even more charm, but its popularity has grown over the years. This denomination refers to gorge created by the river Noguera Ribagorçana. It forms a natural border between Lleida and Huesca. This gorge is part of some protected natural areas, such as the Sierra del Montsec and the Natural Reserve of La Noguera. Since 1999 it has been a protected space by the Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera. Some parts of the gorge are up to 500 meters high and in some other areas there are narrow spaces that only separate the area by twenty meters. This natural space has an important flora and fauna, with animals such as the bearded vulture or the golden eagle.

How we got to this area

To get to this natural place you can go from Barcelona through the Catalonia area or from Zaragoza in Aragon. From Barcelona on the A2 you have to turn off to Balaguer. You can then take the C13 towards Tremp or the C12 towards Aguer. Before reaching Tremp, take the LV-9124 to Guardiá de Noguera. From there you continue about twenty kilometers along a local road to reach the La Masieta car park. If you take the C12 you have to turn off towards Agulló. On the other hand, if we go from Zaragoza to this car park, we must go towards Huesca and continue towards the town of Barbastro on the N-240 and then on the N-230 to Puente de Montañana.

In the Congost de Mont-rebei it is a place to go hiking, being the most popular activity. But it is also possible to find other activities, such as the kayaking on the river. On the other hand, it is possible to visit the Parc Astronómic Montsec, an important astronomical park. In this natural area it is possible to discover some good restaurants to try the local gastronomy, such as the Restaurante del Llac.

In this gorge there is one thing that is really popular, and it is the hiking trail that can be done. It is not that it is a fixed route, since there are different points from which you can reach the Congost de Mont-rebei, but without a doubt the best known route is the one that part of the La Masieta car park. Here we will find an information booth to know how to do the route. This route is carved into the mountain, and offers incredible views of the gorge from various points. It begins with a walk of about two kilometers and passes through an interesting suspension bridge. After this path we pass the gorge carved into the rock. After passing a tunnel you can go to visit the Cova Colomera. This is a very beautiful area and every few meters there are benches to sit down to rest, take pictures and contemplate the beautiful landscapes.

The route then heads towards Montfalcó, where you can see the Montfalcó fountain. Must go through the hanging bridge of the Congost del Seguer and by wooden walkways that are located vertically. It is also possible to stop to see the hermitage of Satna Quiteria and San Bonifacio. It is important to bear in mind that the way back must be done in the same way, so we must start the route early and take into account the time it will take to return. In addition, this route is not suitable for people with vertigo, both in the excavated areas and on the suspension bridges.

The La Masieta car park is one of the most popular places to start the route through this natural space. The car park is open all year. As we say, this was an area that was not very crowded, but today it has become somewhat more popular. On low season we can park without problem any and it will be free. However there is a fee per car in high season as it can easily get crowded. This season you can reserve a place online just in case, so we will make sure that when we arrive we will have our space.
