German customs

German customs

Every time we travel to a country we have to do collection of customs and traditions to know a little about how they are there. Although it is true that in Europe the cultures are similar and there is not as much difference as in Asian areas, for example, in each country they have their own customs that we should know to adapt to the lifestyle.

All the customs of Germany they are easy to understand and recognize. In fact, they are similar to those of other European countries, although they differ culturally from other countries, especially southern countries, where people are more open and there is another way of expressing things.

Holidays in Germany

In Germany they like parties, this is more than proven. They have parties for the exaltation of beer, wine or apples. We just have to look for the parties we want to go to, which are celebrated especially when the weather is good. These parties tend to be geared towards large gatherings, since what Germans like is sit with friends and family and share foods and moments together. While in other countries there are parties more focused on dance, in Germany they focus on large gatherings to talk, eat and drink.

Invitations home

If we go as tourists to Germany this can hardly happen to us but you never know, so it is better to be forewarned. It's rude to show up at someone's house uninvited, like anywhere. But the Germans are also very jealous of their private and family life, so you have to be tactful in this regard. They do not have as open a culture as we can have in Spain, where it is more common to come to a home and just stay to eat. In this country you have to be invited and it is also rude to show up with nothing. Must bring something, a detail such as a bottle of wine or a snack as a gift for being invited.

When it comes to eating out

It is surprising how well animals are treated in Germany. The first time we went with a pet we were surprised to be able to enter all the premises with it, including restaurants. But they also put a bowl of water on the dog without asking. They have a culture of animal care that is very different from that of our country, but if we are going to take the pet, it must have all the papers in order and the microchip. On the other hand, in restaurants the tip is usually included in the bill, although in most places it is common to tip waiters, cleaners in hotels or anyone who performs a service. They have one great tip culture, something that we must take into account, since in our country it is not so common. In the same way, in Germany you have to say something if you did not like the service or the food for whatever reason. They have a very professional view of business and always want to satisfy their customers.

Personalised attention

This is where we should be most careful if we come from a more open culture, so to speak. In Spain it is common to hug, give two kisses, speak loudly and laugh out loud anywhere. If we travel to places like England or Germany we will see that the way of behaving is much more reserved in general. People often speak quietly on public transport and are not as close when it comes to dealing with other people. When someone is introduced to us, they shake hands and it may be a kiss, but only one. In Spain there are usually two, but this is not done here and it is usually a point where we get very confused out of habit. They are also not close enough to receive hugs or pats on the back. The polite thing to do is always shake hands and introduce yourself.

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest

If there is a party that we cannot miss and that has crossed borders is the Oktoberfest. It is originally celebrated in Munich, but surely it is also possible to enjoy it in other cities. In this festival it is common for everyone to wear traditional costumes, which can be found in stores in the cities. There are several days in which people eat traditional dishes and especially enjoy delicious German beers in large rooms with tables for friends and family to gather. If you are in Germany during the celebration of this event, do not forget to dress in traditional clothes to enjoy a delicious typical German food and beer of the best class.
