Exeter Cathedral in England

Exeter Cathedral facade in Devon

I confess that I am in love with the great cathedrals. That is why when I had in front of me the most beautiful Exeter St Peter's Cathedral I couldn't help but be fascinated.

Exeter is a city in the county of Devon, about 350 kilometers southwest of London. Its magnificent Gothic cathedral is one of the great jewels of England. Possibly it can be said that it is one of the Britain's most beautiful cathedrals.

To find its origin, we must go back to the XNUMXth century, a time when Viking raids were ravaging the English coasts. This Viking danger caused that the great churches were constructed in the interior, to avoid that they suffered attacks. Hence this temple was built in Exeter in the middle of the century. Furthermore, the city was surrounded by a huge wall, so it was a safe haven for such a construction.

However, its current appearance dates from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. When you are in front of it, you can only admire the majesty of its Norman towers and its impressive facade full of sculptures. Experts say that we are possibly facing the UK's most perfect gothic work, mainly the one that was forged in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, known as decorated Gothic.

Located in the center of Exeter, in a quiet place surrounded by green, its main facade began to be built in 1340, and it was not completed until a century later. In them you can see different sculptures, which give it a special touch.

If we access the interior we discover an impressive nave, covered by the longest Gothic ceiling in the world (90 meters in length). It is a marvel to enter and discover that everything we have around us remained intact from the German bombing of 1942.

When you are in it, pay attention to all its architectural details: the impressive ribbed vaults, arches, side chapels, works of art, statues, central nave ... You will see that it is considered one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Great Britain.
