France: Trois Corniches, the panoramic roads of the French Riviera

Grande Corniche France

The Three Cornices (The Three Corniches) They are considered one of the most spectacular coastal roads in the world. The three of them cover at different levels the section of just over thirty kilometers that exists between Nice and Monaco and between Menton and the Italian border. These three roads are named as Basse (low), Moyenne (medium) and Grande (Great), depending on the heights at which they cross the slopes of the mountains, bordering a unique and spectacular mountainous landscape.

The Great Corniche (Grand Corniche) It is the highest coastal road and the one that offers spectacular views of the French banks, especially from the Col d'Èze, which is 512 meters above sea level, as well as from the Belvedère d'Eze viewpoint. Next to Monaco there is also a panoramic point that is worth knowing and that is called Le Vistaero.

The Great Corniche was built by order of Napoleon, following the layout of the old Roman road, Via Julia Augusta. This road is the most rustic and the most dangerous to drive of the three ledges. Its tour allows the traveler to know and visit the picturesque villages perched on the mountains, such as Roquebrune, enjoy nature by hiking on the Cap Martin peninsula or learn more about the history of this region by visiting the Roman remains in La Turbie.
