Free plans to do in Copenhagen

SMK

We all like to travel, especially if by doing so we manage to save some money since sometimes this pleasure can be expensive: the plane ticket, the hotel stay, the entrance to the tourist attractions, eating out, buying souvenirs for our friends and family ... Fortunately, in practically all cities there are free activities to do to enjoy the trip without spending a euro. This is the case of Copenhagen, in Denmark.

Cultural afternoon at the SMK museum

The SMK Museum in Copenhagen, also known as the Statens Museum for Kunst, is the national gallery of Denmark. It is a highly recommended place to go both for the works it houses and for its architecture. In addition, access is free on Tuesdays so you can enjoy its permanent collection without spending a crown.

It is also convenient to be attentive to the other activities that the SMK museum offers us. Depending on the season, some days the art gallery becomes a large space for events and parties open to the public with spectacular views of Copenhagen from its terrace.

The ticket price as of June 2016 is 110 DKK. However, we recommend purchasing the Copenhagen Card as you can visit different places of interest and use public transport without having to worry about tickets and prices.

Copenhagen Botanical Garden

Located near Rosenborg Palace and Norreport Station, the Copenhagen Botanical Garden contains the largest collection of plants in Denmark. Its gardens are home to more than 600 species of Danish plants and a tree dating back to 1806. They are also part of the Natural History Museum of Denmark and are managed by the University of Copenhagen.

The Botanical Garden has existed since 1870 and consists of 10 hectares that are used for educational or scientific purposes, as well as as a place of rest in summer or refuge in winter. Its centerpiece is a complex of XNUMXth century glass houses that are used as greenhouses to grow everything from arctic plants to cacti, succulents or orchids.

To move around the gardens, follow the well-marked trails. Each garden is organized by plant type and includes the name in Latin as well as Danish. Entry to the Copenhagen Botanical Garden is free and can be visited every day, from May to September and closed on Mondays for the rest of the year.

Copenhagen by bike

The Danish capital is made to be seen by bicycle. Copenhagen has 350 km of safe bike lanes separated from the normal road so that you can enjoy a stroll through the city or quickly reach the beaches, forests and other attractions that are in the vicinity.

To get to know Copenhagen by bike, you don't need to rent a bike or take a bike there. Just take one of the free public bicycles in the center of the capital that can be used by leaving a deposit of 3 euros, which is recovered when returning it at any of the stations throughout the city.

Concerts at the Royal Danish Opera

Every year the Royal Danish Opera organizes free concerts to enjoy in the beautiful building of the Royal Theater designed by the prestigious Danish architect Henning Larsen. It is located on the island of Holmen, which is connected by bridges that allow access to the Opera by bicycle, car, bus or on foot.

The Royal Theater of Copenhagen is also known for the careful design that it hides within its walls, which has an exquisite decoration and fantastic acoustics. You can see and hear works by Wagner, Shakespeare or Verdi, among others. There are performances almost every night.

We advise you to book a guided tour in English to discover the history of the building, while you walk through its multiple stages and take a look behind the scenes. In addition, you will get to know the majestic private balcony of the Queen of Denmark. These visits are available almost every day.

Summer festivals

The summer festivals that are organized in the ports of several Danish cities are the perfect summer formula for free fun to the rhythm of music, artistic performances and good company. A good idea to enjoy your stay in Copenhagen in a different way if you plan to travel there during your summer holidays.
