Fallas in Valencia

The word 'Ninot' means "doll" in Valencian, therefore they are those great masterpieces that we see sculpted year after year. With all the work you have to do, yeah only one is saved from burning and is the one with the most votes in the Ninot Exhibition.

In this exhibition are exposed more than 800 Ninots, which will be evaluated and scored by all visitors. On March 19 the winning Ninot is published y from February 5 they can be visited in the Alquerías room of the Science Museum.

What exactly are the Fallas?

Las Fallas are like associations or groups of friends that usually meet throughout the year in order to prepare their 'ninot' in a local. If their 'ninot' does not turn out to be the winner, they celebrate their great festival on Saint Joseph's Day, where the monuments, also called fallas, are burned.

Depending on the budget of the falla, your monument will be more or less spectacular. What they all tend to have in common is satire and humor. There are many famous people exposed in these failures: from politicians to athletes passing through celebrities from the press of the heart who that previous year have given something to talk about for some matter.

A question that is always asked, especially for those of us who are not Valencians: Why burn something so well done, so laborious and that has also cost money to do it? Well, the festival comes from when the carpenters of the city took out the wood and remains that were no longer useful to the street and burned them. Formerly it was useless remains of wood, today they are true works of art.
