Mallos de Riglos

The world has strange places, places that seem to be carved by the skillful, style-laden hand of someone unknown. It is the case of Mallos de Riglos, those striking and wonderful geological formations that are in Spain.

All the mallos have their name and of course the whole area invites you to practice mountain activities, So if you like to be outdoors and challenge your skills or just enjoy unforgettable landscapes, how about taking a walk around Huesca and do you know the Mallos de Riglos?

The Mallos de Riglos

They are located in the town of Riglos, province of Huesca. You find them just 45 kilometers from the city of Huesca itself in the pre-Pyrenees. Riglos is a charming town built on the bank of the Gállego River, one of the main tributaries of the Ebro and almost 194 kilometers long. There are barely 50 people living here, so there are always more tourists or climbers than inhabitants, but fortunately that has not taken away from the kindness of the treatment.

Obviously the main attraction of Riglos is the bad guys. Geologists say that these peculiar elevations were formed as a result of the elevation of the Pyrenees and they are composed of sediments of boulders, sand and gravel.

It seems that when the mountain range was created, erosion caused large amounts of material to be dragged by river beds towards the Ebro but they were deposited and sedimented there. The gigantic tanks eventually rose and they were carved by wind and water erosion until they took on the present form, so full of chimneys.

As we said at the beginning there are many mallos and each one has its own name. In some cases these refer to their resemblance to something (Knife, Screw, Visor), to people who have climbed them, or to the old houses of Riglos such as Pisón and Firé. We can group them into three large groups: the large, small and so-called Fils.

Between the big bad they highlight the Ram, Pure, Fire with five points, the Castilla, the Knives, well sharpened, the Fly, the Visor, the Frechín and the Water, for example. Between the small baddies are the Herrera, La Magdalena, El Colorado, El Chichín, Red water, the Capable or the Cored, for example.

On the other hand is the Massif d'os Fils, of horizontal stratification with the Peña don Justo, the Screw and the Screw, as well as the Wall of the Vultures, sometimes called Mallo Arcaz. The truth is that whatever is wonderful. All the mallos of Riglos are impressive because its vertical walls can reach 300 meterss and the place where they are located decorates the postcard even more because they are located next to the town and the course of the Gállego river itself. They are not to believe.

This type of place naturally attracts those who love mountain climbing or nature in general. The attraction was born in the XNUMXth century but is still very much alive today. And the best thing is that to climb some mallos it is not necessary to be a skilled climber or mountaineer as some can climb on foot. This is the case of the Mallo del Agua, the Paredón de los Buitres, the Melchor Frechín, the Visera or the Massif d'os Fils.

Climbing the Mallos de Riglos

The bad guys they have several routes of different difficulties but you have to be in good physical condition. The roads of the mallos, their equipment, they are quite variable (There are some super modern and others rather classic), so if you plan to climb one, it is advisable to inform yourself well beforehand so as not to find surprises.

Between the bad ones you can climb are the following: Mallo Fire (has two ways), The visor (with a single track), the Mallo Melchor Frechin (with four tracks), the Mallo Piso with four tracks), the Colorado, it is worth knowing that it is one of the easiest and smallest mallos, and with several routes of more than 120 meters very well equipped, and the Red Needle with its 150 meters with its track. This mallón and the Colorado are the most popular among climbers who prefer low altitude.
