Pandataria and its sunken ship graveyard

Roman amphorae

Pandataria, today known as Ventotene, is one of the Pontine Islands located in the Gulf of Gaeta, in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Due to its location, between Rome and Naples, the island served as a refuge during bad weather, but it was also used for the exile of Roman nobles.

And it is precisely in these waters that a team of archaeologists, thanks to sonar technology, has scanned the seabed and made an astonishing discovery: A cemetery with 5 ancient Roman shipwrecks dating from the XNUMXst century to the XNUMXth century.

They were commercial ships that seemed about to leave, but never made it. They are found in very deep waters and for this reason they have remained intact for hundreds of years. The photos they have taken reveal the contents of the ships: Italian wine, a prized Spanish and African fish sauce and Italian metal ingots.

Thinking that the island is highly coveted by divers, It is thought that in the not too distant future there will be many treasure hunters who will go to the ship graveyard, even if it is deep.
