Entrance to Peratallada

This town is located in the area of the Costa Brava, inland. From Vulpellac it is reached by the GI-644 if we come from Girona. If we come from the coastal area, such as Palamós, then we must turn off at Sant Climent de Peralta. You have to be vigilant, because it is easy to skip the town, since it is small. The best option is always to use GPS. Upon reaching the village there three car parks in the vicinity. Houses Peratallada

This town has a name that means 'carved stone', and it is that as you can see in the surroundings, the stone is one of the main elements that was used to fortify and raise the town. It barely has 100 inhabitants, so we can think that it is a very quiet place all year round. The truth is that during the week and in low season it is an ideal place, as there are few people visiting it, but on the weekends and during the summer there are more and more visitors, which takes away a certain charm from this medieval environment. That is why it is recommended to visit it when we find few people. The curious thing is that in this town it was forbidden to build new constructions even before it was declared a Historic-Artistic Site, which indicates the great importance that the tradition and history of the town had for its people.

The streets of the town

One of the things to see in this town is undoubtedly its streets. Narrow streets of medieval layout, cobbled and beautiful. They make us feel in another era and we can imagine stories of ladies and gentlemen. We can pass under arches, see its beautiful constructions and admire how the vines climb many of the walls, giving the atmosphere a fairy tale charm that conquers everyone who visits Peratallada.

Church of Sant Esteve

Sant Esteve Church

The old Romanesque church of Sant Esteve is located outside the town walls. East temple dates from the XNUMXth century and it is at the end of a beautiful walk with trees that frames it to take really beautiful photographs of the environment. What stands out is its large facade with pointed arches, a small rose window and a door with a semicircular arch. It is a fairly simple facade, with straight lines but great beauty. His style is defined as late Romanesque Empordà. The bad thing about this church is that you cannot visit the inside unless we go to the tourist office for a guided tour. Inside there is not much to see, since it is unfinished and in the Civil War all the decoration was removed, but there is an old baptismal font and the Gothic-style tomb of Baron Gilabert de Crüilles.

Castle-Palace of Peratallada

Peratallada Castle

The first documents that speak of this castle are from the year 1065, but apparently this construction comes from the evolution of constructions that are even earlier, reaching the time of the Romans. In the castle you can see elements of Romanesque, Gothic and later styles. It is accessed from Plaça del Castell, which should have been the old parade ground. It was converted into a luxury hotel and currently it is not possible to visit, although at first visits were allowed.

The Tower of Hours and the Circular Tower

El castle was fortified with a wall in the XNUMXth century. At present there is almost nothing left of it but some of its towers are preserved. One of them is the Torre de las Horas, which was the town's public clock, and which stands out for having arches at its top. The Circular Tower has precisely that shape and has loopholes for weapons.

The Carrer d'en Vas

This is apparently the most photographed place within the town, so it is worth stopping at. It has a beautiful stone arch, walls with ivy in the background and steep, cobbled streets. The perfect place to take the last photo in the town of Peratallada.
