Pico de las Nieves: an excursion to the highest summit of Gran Canaria

Snow Peak Gran Canaria

The traveler who reaches the mountainous center of Gran Canaria (Spain), you will be able to appreciate the spectacular panorama of the central massif and its peaks. Any visitor who is willing to take this picturesque route will find narrow roads that go up and through charming villages between deep ravines and high plateaus. The landscape is incomparable and varied, passing through lush subtropical vegetation that, as it rises, changes through pine forests and high mountain shrubs.

This slope is crowned by its highest peak, the Snow Peak, which with its 1.949 meters stands out as the highest point of Gran Canaria and also its geographical center. This peak is followed in height and proximity by the emblematic Roque Nublo, whose summit is at 1.813 meters, and which is crowned by a basalt formation that stands out approximately 80 meters. After the latter is the Roque Bentayga, 1.412 meters high.

Both rocks were considered sacred sites by the ancient aborigines of the island, leaving there numerous inscriptions and ceremonial sites as testimony of its relevance. The center of the island is populated by numerous archaeological parks, where it is possible to learn about the life of the ancient inhabitants of this region. In this area it is also possible to find interesting natural reserves where various ecosystems that show unparalleled natural landscapes are still preserved.
