The amazing exterior sculptures of the Guggenheim in Bilbao

It is said, with all the reason in the world, that the Guggenheim Museum changed forever, and for the better, the look of the city of Bilbao and its estuary. Not only because of the cultural weight and the daring architecture of its building, but also because of the amazing sculptures that rise outside. A lovely walk full of surprises.

The most famous is that of Puppy, a 12-meter tall dog built of steel and covered with live flowers. The people of Bilbao, with their stark sense of humor, call him "the dog" and the museum, located behind him, "the doghouse". But Puppy is not the only sculpture that attracts attention in the exteriors of the Guggenheim.

One of the most famous and photographed is Mom (mom in French), a play by Louise Bourgeois represents a gigantic spider made of bronze, stainless steel and marble. It weighs 22 tons, and is 10 meters high. Those who walk along the estuary near the Puente de la Salve pass under its feet not without a certain resentment. Will the arachnid come to life and want to eat us?

Other impressive sculptures are those of The tulipsby Jeff Koons, the creator of Puppy, which represents a bunch of seven tulips measuring approximately 5 meters in brightly colored steel; or that of the Red Arches, by Daniel Buren, which covers the structure of the La Salve Bridge, located next to the museum tower.

Finally, it is worth mentioning the sculpture called The great tree and the eye, the museum's latest acquisition. An Anish Kapoor creation made up of 80 reflective stainless steel spheres at the back of the museum, above the pond.
