"The Hand" or "The Man emerging to life" It is a monument of the Chilean artist Mario Irrarazábal located in Punta del Este, a popular resort town in Uruguay. Built in 1982, the artist has created more hand-shaped works in different parts of the world. As for example that of the desert of Chile.

During the summer of 1981 the First International Meeting of Modern Outdoor Sculpture was held in Punta del Este and Irarrázabal chose this beach as the setting for his artistic creation.

The Monument was originally called "Monument to the drowned man" but later changed its name to "Monument to man emerging to life" because the former was considered pejorative. The original idea of the sculptor was to give bathers a kind of warning. The waters at La Barra beach had great swell and were dangerous while the waters at Solanas beach were more conducive to swimming.

The monument represents five fingers partially submerged in the sand that touch the sea breeze with their tips.
