The impressive Basilica of Saint Joseph, in Montreal

St. Joseph's Basilica in Montreal

One of the most beautiful cities on the east coast of North America is the Canadian Montreal, province of Quebec. It is a beautiful city so what you can do is, if you go to New York, launch yourself to know Boston, Washington and Montreal in the same trip. It is really worth crossing the border. Here then you can visit the Basilica of Saint Joseph, a huge building with a copper covered dome that is impressive. Saint Joseph or Saint Jospeh is the patron saint of Canada and the building is imposing because it has been built on top of Mount Royale.

The history of the temple is related to the history of a priest named André who was very devoted to Saint Joseph. He was not in good health so he worked as a receptionist and doorman at the College of Notre Dame in Montreal but he also had the habit of visiting the sick. It seems that at one point these patients were cured after his visit so he began to have a reputation as a miracle cure. He adored Saint Joseph so much that he made a small collection of donations and built a small wooden chapel near where the basilica stands today. Became the oratory of Saint Joseph. Father André died in 1927 on a very cold winter day and in 1955 his dream of building a great church was fulfilled. Later he was beatified by Pope John Paul II and canonized by Benedict XVI.

La St. Joseph's Basilica It rises 263 meters above the city of Montreal and its gigantic dome is the second largest after that of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is in the Italian Renaissance style and looks like the Cathedral of Florence. It has stained glass windows with scenes from the religious history of Canada, a huge organ with 5811 pipes, a carillon with 56 bells and next to it is a museum dedicated to Saint André who guards his embalmed heart.
