The least known beaches of Cuba: Santa María del Mar

Santa Maria del Mar

When we think of beaches in Cuba, the first thing we think of is Varadero beach. But Cuba has many other beaches little known to tourists but worth visiting.

To the east of Havana is a long coastal strip known as Playas del Este. In Playas del Este you can find beaches like Guanabo, Bacuranao, Tarará, or Santa María del Mar, which I am going to tell you about today.

Santa María del Mar beach is a 10km stretch of very fine sand and is located 35km from the center of Havana. This beach is the most popular among Havanans. In any case, the bathing season of Havanans begins in June and ends in November, so the rest of the year tourists can enjoy an almost deserted beach. Even in high season, you can always find a lonely corner in the 10km stretch of Santa María del Mar.

You can get to Santa María del Mar from Havana with public transport, but it is not highly recommended due to the high number of passengers. The best option is to hire a taxi, but yes, negotiating the price in advance.
