withimbriga

The Romans have been to many corners of Europe and have also left their mark on Portugal. Lusitania, the Roman province in this part of the continent, is a faithful witness and among the archaeological attractions of Portugal today we present the ruins of Conímbriga.

Conimbriga It was a Roman city that was located on a military road that linked the current cities of Lisbon and Braga. Today the ruins are near the city of Condeixa-a-Nova. The Romans arrived here around 139 BC, although archaeologists suppose that there was already some building of Celtic origin in the place.

Conimbriga It grew under the government of César Augusto, with the construction of baths and other public buildings. With the decline of the Empire and the barbarian danger a wall was quickly built whose remains are still visible today. But the end was near for this and many other Roman cities so finally the people left and founded another city in the vicinity.

Today the Conímbriga archaeological site It is the most important in Portugal as far as Roman history is concerned. Many excavations and studies have been done and beautiful mosaic floors, paved streets, part of the hot springs, walls and arches have been uncovered. After all, here, at its best, 10.600 people lived in Conímbriga.
