The stork, symbol of Alsace

storks alsace

The region of Alsace in France there are two found and often confronted souls: the German and the French. luckily, the Alsatians have a good number of signs of identity that unite them. Perhaps the most important is the stork, the symbol of Alsace, a much loved and respected bird at this crossroads of Europe.

When we travel the Alsatian roads it is very easy to discover storks' nests in the treetops, the roofs of houses and the steeples of churches. However, to discover the importance of these animals in the culture of these lands and to know more about a truly amazing animal, it is best to go directly to the town of Hunawih, in the department of the Lower Rhine. There is the Stork Reintroduction Center.

Hunawihr is located in the middle Alsace Wine Route, more or less halfway between the city of Colmar and the town of Riquewihr, perhaps the most beautiful in the area. The center was inaugurated in 1976 with the aim of saving the population of Alsatian storks. The objective was more than met and today thousands of couples live throughout this region, between the Rhine and the Vosges mountain range.

The visit is very interesting because in Hunawihr, in addition to storks, many other species of birds live. It is curious to observe them in their nests built on artificial platforms, perhaps not as beautiful as the bell towers, but extremely effective for the function they must fulfill. If you like nature, you will return from your trip to Alsace with hundreds of photographs of beautiful and elegant storks.
