The Tourlitis lighthouse in Andros

Despite the crisis and the wounds left by mass tourism, the Mar Egeo it still retains its mythological essence. just choose any of the three thousand Greek islands that dot this part of the Mediterranean to prove it. Today we turn our gaze to the shores of Andros, in the Cyclades, in front of which stands one of the most beautiful marine watchmen in the world: the Tourlitis Lighthouse.

This small and charming lighthouse stands on the islet of Tourlitis, just a piece of rock emerged about 200 meters away in front of the port of Chora. Built in 1897, it is the first modern lighthouse to illuminate the coasts of Greece and undoubtedly the most picturesque.

This sentinel serves as an ornament to a wonderful landscape but like everyone else, it has to endure the rigors of the sea. And it is that the Aegean is not always as placid as we see in the photos of the travel catalogs: there are strong storms and in Andros in particular many days of strong wind and waves.

A flight of stairs carved into the rocks leads to the lighthouse, although there are no lighthouse keepers living inside, as his lantern works automatically. The Tourlitis Lighthouse was destroyed in World War II, the current one is a replica of the original building erected in 1990 on the initiative of Alexandros goulandris, an oil magnate from the island of Andros who wanted to honor the memory of his deceased daughter.
