Thermal baths in Tuscany

View of Bagno Vignoni, thermal town in Tuscany

In Myself trip through Italy I fell madly in love with the Toscana. Its landscapes, picturesque villages and the architecture of its large cities, in addition to its rich gastronomy and the kindness of its people make it one of the best regions in Europe to travel. If to this we add one of the best kept secrets in the area ...

What is that secret that Tuscany holds? Precisely its land, and not only because of those wonderful landscapes it has, but also because of the excellent properties of its thermal waters, which were already known by civilizations such as the Roman and Etruscan. Therefore there are many spas that we can find throughout Tuscany to relax and enjoy.

But in addition to spas, there are many other thermal water centers that, I didn't believe it either, but it's true, they are completely free. Throughout the year we can access them, both day and night. Lakes, small rivers, ponds, waterfalls ... hot springs, most of them at a constant temperature of about forty degrees Celsius.

The best known of these thermal baths is in Saturnia, in the province of Grosseto, south of Tuscany. It is a series of natural pools with sulphurous waters, each one with capacity for four or five people. The water flows from a waterfall where we can give ourselves a hot back massage.

Further north, in the province of Siena, we have the cold water pool of San Casciano dei Bagni. You should come to these pools especially in summer, and especially during the hottest hours, as the water is always freezing. When you get into the water, the difference in temperature will make your body relax tremendously. Try the experience and you will tell me ...

The same road that leads to Siena leads us to Bagni San Filippo. Here the pool is at the foot of Mount Amiata, a volcano that has been inactive for several centuries, and which offers us an impressive natural environment. To bathe here I recommend you come between the months of March to November.

Still further north you come to Bagno Vignoni, a beautiful town that houses ancient Roman baths on the side of the hill. Its waters are warm and surrounded by a magnificent natural environment, in the heart of Val d'Orcia. Since you are here, I recommend you visit the town, a luxury for rural tourism.

Finally I recommend pietrolo, located on the Siena-Grosseto road, near Siena. Is he warmest thermal bath in Tuscany, very close to the river Merse. There are pools for one or two people, and another larger pool next to the river, cooler than the first. Even so, the sensation of going from the hot water of the pool to the cold water of the river is amazing.

As you can see, Tuscany is one of those places that have it all. If you do tourism in the area, do not forget its thermal baths. In addition to producing pleasure for the body, they are an exciting natural beauty supplement.
