Three of the most beautiful cliffs in the world

Cliffs of Moher 4

There are wonderful landscapes around the world but I think the cliffs are one of the most imposing and overwhelming. That magnitude, magnificence, that reveals the size of the world and makes us feel very small, is something without equal. The very edge of the world, as some poets say.

There are cliffs on every continentAfter all, they are geographical accidents and although the most common are over the sea, there are in rivers, faults and mountains. The truth is that some always stand out above others. I have made my selection and I hope you share it with me: Cliffs of Moher, White Cliffs of Dover and Bunda Cliffs. Which one do you like the most?

The Cliffs of Moher

Cliffs of Moher

They are part of the dramatic south west coast of Ireland. They extend throughout the Burren region, in the county clare and they look at the Atlantic Ocean. They reach about Meters 120 and the highest point, called Hag'Head, reaches 214 meters. Here stands a picturesque tower, the O'Brien Tower, built in stone in 1835.

Ever in the highest point of the cliff, Hag'Head, there was a fort called Moher that stood until 1780 and was demolished in the early years of the XNUMXth century. From him the magnificent cliffs received their name. Today the entire area is a geopark and one of the tourist meccas of Ireland and the county that year after year receives more visitors from all over the world. They are located near the village of Liscannor and about 50 kilometers away is Shannon International Airport.

O Brien Tower

By land you can get there directly from Galway, it is an hour and a half away, and in the case of arriving from Dublin the trip is three and a half hours passing through Limerick. Of course you can also use the bus from these cities. You should calculate about two hours of visit although most tourists spend half a day here or even return the next day. If you can stay overnight in one of the county Clare villages, all the better, to make a more complete cultural experience.

At the Cliffs of Moher you can do many things: walk, enjoy the views, watch birds, visit the O'Brien Tower, visit the Cliffs Exhibition, sign up for a tour. Please note that in the high season, the summer, between July and August, there are a lot of people at peak times, between 11am and 3pm, so if you arrive by car it is better to avoid these times.

The Visitor Center is open until 9pm in that season. Prices? General admission per adult is 6 euros, those under 16 do not pay and those over 65 pay 4 euros. The ticket is accompanied by a map and an information leaflet in 14 languages. To visit the tower you pay 2 euros more per adult and 1 per child. It is convenient, from the tower the views are even better.

White Cliffs of Dover

Cliffs of Dover

These cliffs They are on the coast of England, in the Straits of Dover, facing the French coast. They are not as high as Moher's, they reach about 110 meters high, but because of the composition of the earth they are striking: chalk and black flint. They are the face of England looking at Europe and the first thing you see when you approach Great Britain via the English Channel. They have been seen by the Romans and the Normans, for example.

A part of these cliffs is part of an area designated as an Area of Great Natural Beauty. For more than fifteen years a Visitor Center has been operating that houses a restaurant and contains an exhibition of history, geology and archeology of the area. The best thing one can do here is walk well there are many trails in the area and the different routes are explained to you in the visitor center.

Aerial view of the cliffs of Dover

If you go in August there is a Festival de Senderistas, towards the end of the month, organized by a group called White Cliffs Ramblers. You have to be careful because there is usually a collapses, in fact in 2012 huge pieces fell off and fell into the canal, so don't get too close to the edge. The Visitor Center is open daily between 10 am and 5 pm, March through October, and between 11 am and 4 pm in winter. Eye that closes on December 24, 25 and 26.

White Cliffs of Dover 2

Dover is easily accessible by car, train or boat. If you are in Lonres and you don't have a car, you can take a train and an hour and twenty minutes you arrive, from St. Pancras Station and almost two hours from London Victoria.

Bunda Cliffs

Bunda Cliffs

If Australia has something to spare, it is amazing landscapes and the Bunda for me are among the best cliffs in the world. They are on the coast of the state of South Australia and Western Australia and they are the longest and most uninterrupted sea cliffs in the world. There are no others like it. They range from the Border village in Western Australia to the Head of Bight, near Yalata, in South Australia.

They stretch for 100 kilometers and they have a height that varies between 60 and 120 meters. Although there are several points from the ground from which they are visible, there is nothing like appreciating them from the air so helicopter tours are the most popular. The whales arrive between June and October so if you do the flight then the views are even better. Also, these cliffs contain the largest cave system in the world and there are still many miles to explore.

Bunda Cliffs 3

If you stop at the top of the cliffs you will see that there are small pieces of seashells on land, which reveals that the Nullarnor area was once millions of years ago it was a seabed. It is estimated that this magnificent landscape was formed between 100 and 50 million years ago when Australia separated from what is now Antarctica. The ocean flooded the land, the land rose later and these cliffs are the part that dived and then emerged. That is why the caves inside hide treasures that reveal that distant, enormous fauna that inhabited the planet at that time.

Bunda Cliffs 1

If you decide to travel to Australia, visit the Bunda Cliffs. If you go between May and September you will see the whales from Head of Bight, although if you go at another time of year the views from here are still the best. A scenic flight costs around AU $ 140 per half hour.

Of course there are many other beautiful cliffs so I am not forgetting the Étreats in France, the cliffs of Santorini, Los Gigantes de Tenerife or the impressive Norwegian Preikestlen.
