Titlis, the tallest and most fantastic suspension bridge in Europe

Switzerland is a country that we can visit throughout the year. Its lake landscapes are great for winter sports or enjoying hot chocolates, but summer is also a great time for tourism.

Mountains, glaciers, lakes, forests, villages and fairytale cities. All that is combined to make it one of the top destinations in Europe. There are those who complain about their prices but we already know that nothing stops an inveterate traveler with few fleas, so there are always ways to get cheaper. All for a dizzying hike on the Titlis, the highest suspension bridge in Europe!

Titlis

It is the name of a Uri alps mountain which is located right on the border between the cantons of Bern and Obwwalden and has around 3200 meters. Accessed from Engelberg, on the Obwalden canton side, a super popular winter and summer resort since the tourism boom in the XNUMXth century.

Engelberg is a very popular alpine village in central Switzerland and its centuries-old fame is due to the Benedictine Abbey that it houses. If you are in Lucerne then you cannot miss it because it is close and very accessible. Titlis Mountain is in turn south of the village and the top is reached by cableway that is part of the Titlis Bergahnen.

This cableway bears the title of being the world's first rotating cableway connecting Engelberg to the top and stopping at three stops at different heights: 1262 meters, 1796 and 2428 meters high.

The views provided by the last section are fantastic because the cableway fly over the glacier and in fact, once up, one of the walks you can do is visit a glacial ice cave that is right next to the station with its shops and restaurants. The top of the mountain has perpetual snow So it's always cold and there's always snow Still in summer.

Titlis Cliff Walk

As it says in the title of the post, it is the highest suspension bridge in the world. It was built in 2012 at about three thousand meters of altitude and crosses a distance of almost one hundred meters. Its width? It does not reach the meter wide so that makes the ride more impressive.

The official opening was in December 2012, a snowstorm day, so the officials from several European countries who had been invited died of cold and could see little at the event. Just the next day the most adventurous tourists accessed the bridge. Now that it is spring and summer is coming from there, a clear and clear day, you can see the glacier about 460 meters below and sharpening the eye, Italy in the distance.

Engineers designed it to withstand strong winds and several tons of accumulated snow. The bridge was built in five months with the clear goal of becoming a major tourist attraction. Hence the bombastic titles of «The highest suspension bridge in the world» or «the ride with the most adrenaline».  Crossing it involves walking 150 steps.

The walk joins the Ice Flyer chairlift with the station. These fantastic chairlifts are what they transport you to the glacier and its ten meter deep crevasses. If you go in summer you can access the toboggan run of Glaciar Park with them and if you go in winter, then don't forget your skis.

What are the prices to move around here? The cableway ride between Engelberg and Titlis costs 92 Swiss francs and the Ice Flyer chair lifts cost 12 Swiss francs.. You get cheaper prices if you have the Engelberg Guest Card and the Eurail or Interrail Pass in your hands. For its part, there is also the Titlis rotating gondola or Titlis Rotair, it rotates 360 degrees in the five minute trip providing panoramic views of rocks, canyons and snowy and distant peaks.

La glacier cave It is the icing on the cake because it is the heart of Titlis Mountain. Its ice is very, very old and according to experts it predates the historical moment in which humans discovered fire. It is 150 meters long and there are walkways to move in various directions, even down 20 meters. It's deep blue, because of the reflection of the light, and as we said at the beginning it is cold so expect temperatures below 0º. How do you get there? Down a corridor from the Titlis Rotair station and best of all is that Entrance to the cave is absolutely free.

Titlis Glacier Park is open all year and you can even slide down its tracks with the fret embedded in a colorful tire. The one of turns that are given! It is worth remembering that admission is also free. What is not free but many people gladly pay is a photoshoot with typical Swiss costumes which is offered right there (there is no shortage of cowboy, vintage and ski costumes).

The clothes are designed to be put on over the clothes we wear, quickly, and the photo is the funny postcard that you cannot miss: your friends, Titlis Mountain and you with that typical happy traveler smile. The photo-postcard is ready in three minutes and you can order it in four sizes: 13 x 18 cm, 20 x 30 cm, 30 x 45 cm and 40 x 60 cm. Prices? 35, 59, 89 and 118 CHF respectively.

You can also pay for the photo on the Ice Flyer or the photo on the Titlis Cliff Walk. As a fun activity and memory of our passage through Titlis and its suspension bridge it is not a bad idea.
