Tourism on Lake Garda

The lakes are vacation destinations of choice in both winter and summer, and one of the most beautiful in Italy is the Lake Garda, huge, majestic and very touristy. At the foot of the Alps he awaits us, why not ?, to spend a few days next winter.

The lake is in the north of the country, about 25 kilometers from Verona, distributed among three Italian regions such as Trentino - Alto Adige, Verona and Lombardy.  Has some islands and numerous towns and cities have been built on its shores. The postcard is so attractive ...

Garda lake

In this glacial lake which was formed precisely at the end of the last ice age. It occupies an area of about 368 square kilometers and it is almost 52 kilometers long. It has eight small islands, the islets of Stella and Altare, the Isle of Garda, that of San Biagio, the Isle of Coniglio, the Trimelone and Olivo and Val idi Sogno.

There are many rivers and streams that are its tributaries, although only one is born from the lake itself, the Mincio River. The landscape is wonderful and that is thanks to its Mediterranean climate, with frequent winds in the afternoon and temperatures that in the middle of July exceed 20ºC. What are the best destinations on Lake Garda? Well, we are going to concentrate on Sirmione, Desenzano, Peschiera del Garda, Gardone Riviera and Brescia.

Brescia It is just minutes from the lake and is a great destination if you like history because it concentrates from Roman to medieval history. It is a Lombard city, capital, where many people live. The oldest part, with the Roman Forum and the Santa Giulia Monastery, is World Heritage since 2011. It is a beautiful destination with many churches, museums and works of important artists, squares, palaces ...

The coast of Brescia on Lake Garda is a recommended walk that leads patiently towards Salò, the Riviera Gardone and Malcesine, from where one can take the cable rail that reaches the top of the Monte Baldo. What a view from up there! The mountain is 1800 meters high and in summer it is common to see hikers walking along its many trails while in winter it is a ski destination.

Since we talked about the Gardone Riviera It must be said that it is one of the best resorts on the lake and that has many historic villas, parks and beautiful gardenss. In summer it is a delight for the eyes and ears as many musical and cultural events are held. One of the best houses is that of the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio, now a museum, but you cannot miss the Hruska botanical garden, with plants from all over the world among lakes and rocks.

Peschiera del Garda It is also a popular and interesting destination, a perfect place to go on vacation. In addition to beaches over the lake and a bike path that runs along the banks of the Mincio river and passes over medieval walls, there are palaces, old military constructions, churches and sanctuaries, such as the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Frassino.

On the other hand there is also Desenzano, a smaller and more concentrated place, tied, we would say, around the Plaza Malvezzi and the Old Port. There are XNUMXth century palaces here, that of the local architect Todeschini is a beautiful one, but there are also ruins of a Roman villa from the XNUMXth century with colorful mosaics and an interesting Museum of Archeology. Or some great panoramic views from the top of the Tower of San Martino della Battaglia.

Finally, Sirmione, just 20 minutes away from Desenzano, on a narrow peninsula that juts out into the lake for four kilometers. The poet Catullus once lived here and that is why there is a place known as the Grotto of Catullus which is the main attraction in the villa.

It is precisely what remains of the huge residence that the Roman Empire poet used to have in the area. The ruins date from the end of the XNUMXst century BC and the beginning of the XNUMXst century AD and is at the end of the peninsula with three different levels following the slopes of the land.

Another attraction around here are the hot springs that flow from the bottom of the lake and have allowed the operation of numerous spas for which the village is known. There are two establishments, the Virgilio and the Catullo and a newer one called Aquaria.

You can also know the Rocca scagliera, the defensive structure that stands unscathed with its tower and its walls. The Sirmione Castle It is a masterpiece surrounded by water, a kind of very peculiar fortified port that today is open to the public and restored.

Finally, if you like amusement parks You can always visit the first park of these characteristics in Italy and one of the largest in Europe: the Gardaland Park, on the southeastern shore of the lake.

This with respect to destiny, but ... what can we say about the activities that Lake Garda offers to its Visitantes? Well, beyond the historical walks throughout the year you can practice some watersports like sailing and windsurfing. As we said above, every afternoon winds (the Ora and the Pelér) blow over the waters of the lake and that allows the Sailing and the organization of quality events. On the north shore of the lake, those who practice windsurf or those who want to learn about this sport.

History, architecture, culture, sports and also, of course, whenever we talk about Italy, gastronomy. What are the delicacies of Lake Garda? Basically wine, extra virgin olive oil and citrus. Around here the wines are very famous and are made in the good Merlot, Cabernet, Nosiola or Groppello vineyards; and with the excellent local lemons the best of the lemongrass. The wines have denomination of origin in white, red and rosé.

Of course these are not the only destinations on the shores of the Garda lake but they are among the most popular so we hope we have given you a good taste of what you can do in this charming part of Italy.
