One of the most interesting places in Stockholm is located on the island of Djurgarden: the Vasa Museum, a space specially built to house a 1628th century ship called the Vasa ship that sank in XNUMX due to adverse weather conditions a few minutes after setting sail.

Centuries later, specifically in 1961, the Vasa ship was refloated and recovered in a good state of preservation thanks to the low level of mollusks and salt in the Baltic Sea. In order for everyone to see this wonderful wooden galleon measuring 69 meters from bow to stern, unique in the world, the Vasa Museum was restored and created, where more than 4.000 objects recovered from the sinking are also preserved, including polychrome sculptures. that decorated the helmet.

You can start the visit to the Vasa museum by watching the documentary on the history of the ship to learn the context of its creation as well as the laborious process of its recovery from the waters.

And from the bottom of the sea we set off for the heights to see the best views of Stockholm. To do this, you will have to climb more than 300 steps of the Stadhuset tower or the city hall, located on the shores of Kungsholmen Island.

The building began to be built in 1911 with Art Nouveau airs and was completed in 1923. For this, almost 8 million red bricks were used that gave the town hall that characteristic image. Its 106-meter high tower is one of the emblems of Stockholm and is crowned by the Swedish heraldic symbol of the three crowns (Tre Kronor) taken from the name given to the old castle where the royal palace is today.

Unlike the rest of the building, to access the Stadshuset tower there are no entry restrictions as long as they are done during normal visiting hours. Inside the inner courtyard is where they take turns to climb the tower and the viewpoint, which is only open in spring and summer.

If we want to take advantage of the visit and see the interior of the town hall, you will have to request a guided tour. Among the rooms that can be seen are the Golden Room (known for its gold and glass mosaics with more than 18 million pieces) and the Blue Room (where the Nobel Prize awards are held every year).

Located in the old town by the sea, the royal palace is the official residence of the Swedish monarch and one of the most interesting sites in the Swedish capital. At the end of the XNUMXth century it was built on the remains of an old medieval castle that was devoured by flames.

The current palace presents an Italian Baroque style, divided into 7 floors with more than 600 rooms of which you can visit a part. The highlights of the visit to the royal palace are the royal chapel, the treasure chamber, the armory, the museum of antiquities of Gustav III and the Tre Kronor museum.

In addition, every week the changing of the guard is held on the esplanade in front of the palace, an act worth seeing. For forty minutes, to the rhythm of the Banda Real scores, the guards parade before the attentive gaze of thousands of spectators.

The historic center of Stockholm and the most beautiful part of the city is called Gamla Stan. It is a grid of cobbled streets filled with historic buildings from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, shops, churches and boutiques.

The best way to get to know Gamla Stan in Stockholm is on foot. Take a walk around Stortoget Square and see the most famous red and yellow houses in the city. Here is also the museum dedicated to the Nobel Prize winners.

Gastronomy is another of the strong points of this part of the city. If you have an appetite, sit down in a restaurant or a cafeteria and order a delicious plate of meatballs or a rich hot chocolate accompanied by a piece of cake. You'll love it!

Stockholm cathedral

Inside Gamla Stan is located the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas or Storkyrkan, as it is popularly known in Swedish and means great church. It is the oldest temple in Stockholm, which appears for the first time in historical writings around 1279. Coronations, royal weddings and other important events have been held inside.

The interior is characterized by its vaulted ceiling and brick walls in a Gothic style. The cathedral houses the famous wooden sculpture of St. George and the dragon, symbolizing Sweden's victory over Denmark. In addition, here is the oldest painting in Stockholm, called Vädersolstavlan, which represents a unique medieval astronomical phenomenon.
