What to see in Korcula

Korcula

Korcula is an island located in the Adriatic Sea, in Croatia. It is located in the Dubrovnik-Neretva county. It has a length of 46 kilometers and a width of about seven kilometers and is the sixth largest island in the Adriatic. This island has been inhabited since Neolithic times, passing through it Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans.

Today this island is a quite quiet place with a large naval and fishing industry, but above all it lives from tourism. Its historic center has not lost its charm and there are several things that we can see in the town of Korcula.

How to get to Korcula

To this island can only be reached by sea, since it does not have an airport. There are ferries that leave from Split in order to go to the island. You can both go on foot and by car, as some ferries carry cars inside so that you can use the rental car on the island to see it. Within the island it is a great idea to be able to move around with a car, because that way you can see all its corners, since there are some beaches and small towns in different areas, beyond the capital. You can visit it quickly and you don't have to travel a long time by car, so it is recommended to go in it and take it on the ferry.

Veliki Revelin Tower

This ancient tower was erected in the fourteenth century and serves as the entrance to the city and is still preserved. This island was under the rule of Venice for centuries and therefore shields related to this mandate can be seen in this old tower. This tower is one of the most photographed pictures on the island, but it is also possible to see a small museum inside the tower in which there are typical costumes of the Moreska dance, a typical dance that was performed in the Middle Ages. Another thing that can be done in this tower is to climb to the top to see the views, although they are not the most spectacular in the city, they are always one more experience.

Marco Polo House

Marco Polo House

Supposedly in this small town the traveler Marco Polo was born, although this title is also disputed by Venice, since it is not very clear where he really was born. But in this city you can see the Casa de Marco Polo, an old house in which there are some explanatory panels about the life of the traveler. In addition, in this house it is possible to climb a tower to enjoy the views and take some beautiful photos. This house is simply a beautiful building, although that label of being the birthplace of Marco Polo has not been focused very well, since the vast majority of tourists are disappointed by how little it has to see, since inside there is no personal utensils.

In front of this house is the Marco Polo Museum, in which you can learn a little more about this adventurer. However, there are not very good reviews about the museum, as it appears to only contain information panels and nothing original about Marco Polo.

St. Mark's Cathedral

This Cathedral was built from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century by local builders. The visit to the church includes being able to climb the tower to see the best views of the small town. In addition, inside this small cathedral we can find a painting of the famous Tintoretto on the altarpiece. At present the cathedral has been decorated with a bronze statue that is in the baptistery.

Gabrielis Palace

Gabrielis Palace

This XNUMXth century palace It is where the city museum is. In this museum it is possible to find objects from the Greek and Roman times of the island, since it was inhabited by different peoples. There are also other palaces, such as the XNUMXth century Abbey Palace. This city is quite small and can be visited in a few hours and see everything that is of interest.

Lumbarda Beaches

Once we have visited the center of Korcula, it is time to relax and enjoy the landscapes of the small island. You have to travel a few kilometers to reach the famous Lumbarda area, which is the best known for bathing, as it has some beaches. This town is small, a town with vineyards and great tranquility, ideal to spend the rest of the day.

Other places of interest

On the small island it is possible to see every corner, and it is done in a short time. In the southern area there are some fishing villages like Putnatska Luka, where diving can be done as the main activity. In Brna and Prizba there are small coves and beaches where you can spend a pleasant and quiet day. In the interior of the island there are also some small towns in which time seems to have stopped.
