What to see in the Basque Country

El Basque Country, a community located to the north that has much to offer tourists, from spectacular landscapes to an enviable gastronomy and many monuments. Making a route through the Basque Country can take time, because there are many corners to see beyond its main cities. It is a place of great beauty, not in vain was it chosen to shoot some scenes of 'Game of Thrones'.

We are going to make a list with some of the points of interest that there is to see in the Basque Country. There are many more interesting things, but we will stop at the main ones. Undoubtedly, this region has managed to maintain its essence throughout the centuries, with a marked culture, delicious gastronomy and green spaces that preserve all their splendor.

We start with Bilbao because it is its largest city and it has a lot to offer. From culture and design to nearby beaches and green areas. That is why it perfectly blends tradition with modernity. One of the most outstanding things to visit and that has become a symbol of the city ​​is the Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Ghery in imitation of a ship. But there are more designers who set their sights on this city, such as Santiago Calatrava, who designed the airport or Phillippe Starck, who created the Alhóndiga community center.

In the city you have to go to the old town, which is known as 'the 7 streets' because they were the ones that made up the original medieval town. It is a very lively area, where you can go in search of the famous Basque pintxos. In the old area you can also visit the Cathedral of Santiago or the Plaza Nueva.

We continue with another of its most important cities, San Sebastián, where the Playa de la Concha with its famous promenade. This has always been a summer area thanks to its beaches, La Concha, Ondarreta and Zurriola. Its beautiful old town is worth seeing, located at the foot of Mount Urgull. In this area is the Plaza de la Constitución and the church of Santa María del Coro. In the San Telmo Museum you can learn about Basque history and culture. In the south of the old town is the area known as the Romantic Center, for its beautiful buildings.

At Monte Urgull you can visit the Castillo de la Mota, a defensive point in the city. Do not forget to see the Peine del Viento at the end of Ondarreta beach, a sculpture created by Eduardo Chillida. In the Bretxa Market you can find the typical products of the area.

In Vitoria you will find the best preserved old town in the community, with beautiful Renaissance-style buildings. In this old area you can see the Bendaña and Escoriaza-Esquivel Palaces. In the first of them there is a museum of letters. In the Augustín-Zulueta Palace is the Museum of Fine Arts. The Cathedral of Santa María is known as the 'Old Cathedral' and has been built in the Gothic style. Green areas are also very important in this city, which is why it has what is known as the 'green ring', an area that surrounds the city and is perfect for walking. If you want to enjoy a bit of leisure, you should go to the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, a central area in the old town where you can have a pintxo in the many bars and terraces. We will also find the same in the Plaza Nueva or Plaza de España.

The beautiful town of Mundaka is located in the Urdabai Biosphere Reserve and is well known for its beach, since surfing is one of the most practiced sports there. The fishing port is one of its most picturesque and visited areas, a place to walk and sunbathe. The Ermita de Santa Catalina is located on a peninsula on the outskirts, with spectacular views of the sea. In addition, its beach has the best left wave in Europe, hence it is a destination for surfers worldwide.

This island is located on the coast of Bizkaia, just 35 kilometers from Bilbao. It was already a previously known place due to its great beauty, but with the arrival of 'Game of Thrones' it has become a place of visit for fans of the series, since scenes have been filmed in it. In the center of the island is the hermitage of San Juan Bautista, which is reached by crossing a stone bridge that connects with the peninsula and through more than two hundred steps. Legend has it that if you get there and ring the bell three times while making a wish, it will come true.
