What to see in the Jerte Valley, Extremadura

Jerte Valley

Valle del Jerte is a mainly nature destination located in Extremadura. A natural area full of beautiful landscapes which has become famous especially for the cherry blossoms during the spring, as it is a real sight to behold. But in the Valle del Jerte there is much more than cherry trees, although they are famous for them.

We will see some of the things to do and see in the Jerte Valley, a destination that is increasingly touristy because it offers different points of interest. From typical mountain villages to natural areas for bathing in summer, tourist routes or viewpoints to enjoy the views of the valley.

Cherry blossom

In the months of March or April, the cherry tree blooms, which has made this valley famous. This is due to the great beauty of cherry blossom, which multiplied by hundreds of trees creates a feeling of floral blanket over the valley. There are many people who only make the excursion to the Valle del Jerte area to see the flowering of these cherry trees, which lasts for a very short time and occurs in spring. However, if we visit the valley at other times we will have other additions that can make the getaway interesting. In winter there is great tranquility in these natural spaces, ideal for hiking. In the fall you can enjoy the change of color in the leaves of the trees and in the summer you can enjoy the varied natural pools in the area.

Hell's Throat Nature Reserve

This natural reserve has a great variety of flora and fauna, but also with hiking trails and great outdoor swimming pools. It is possible to see the golden eagle, the griffon vulture or peregrine falcons. There are other activities that can be done, such as routes by car or bicycle, bird watching or guided tours of the area. The interpretation center of the Garganta de los Infierno is located on the national 110, a road that runs through the Jerte Valley, so we will find it easily. The Los Pilones area is the best known, especially in summer, since the so-called giant kettles are natural and quiet pools located between rocks, which forms a beautiful natural place to cool off with a good bath in season. From the center there are two marked hiking trails, the longest of 16 kilometers and circular. The other is linear and is within the first, with six kilometers to and from Los Pilones.

Cabezuela del Valle and the Cherry Museum

Cabezuela del Valle is one of the most touristic places in the area, with a nice historical set in which the church of San Miguel Arcángel is located. In this town is the Cherry Museum, which is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and in which we can learn more about this fruit that makes the valley famous with its designation of origin. On the other hand, we will also find the Water Interpretation Center.

Jerte and Tornavacas

La Jerte town offers natural spaces very pretty, with cherry trees and meadows. In the center it is possible to see typical buildings with large wooden balconies. There are some visits, such as the XNUMXth century parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. In summer there is a natural pool within the town, El Nogalón. In the town of Tornavacas you can enjoy the Interpretation Center on Transhumance, a very important activity in the area. They also have a church of Our Lady of the Assumption of baroque style.

A route through the viewpoints

The Jerte Valley offers a form of amphitheater that allows you to have many and varied viewpoints from which to enjoy the natural spectacle of cherry blossoms. If we follow the marked hiking trails that we have in the valley, it is possible to reach several of the viewpoints, being the easiest way to find them. There are many of them and they are the perfect places to stop to take photos or observe the fauna and flora of the place. Some of them are the Mirador Puerto de Tornavacas, the Mirador Avenida Extremadura or the Mirador del Chorrero de la Virgen.

Plasencia, the 'pearl of the valley'

The city of Plasencia is very close to the Jerte Valley, so it is also a good visit when we move around the area. In fact, it is called the 'pearl of the valley'. This city has a very important historical and monumental area, where you can enjoy a peculiar new and old cathedral in a unique building, the lively Plaza Mayor or the old walls that protected the city. The city can be seen in one or two days after visiting the natural areas of the Jerte Valley.
