America by car on the Pan-American Highway

panamericana by atacama

America It is a huge, long and wide continent and many adventurers dream of traveling in a car going from one end to the other, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Well, many have done it but at least part of it you can do by following the path of the Route or Pan-American Highway. It is a road of more or less 48.000 km long connecting almost all countries, 13 in total. The idea arose in 1923 in a congress of American states and continued to be projected in the following years.

As of today it is almost completed and arrives to Patagonia from Alaska. More than a single route, it is actually a system of highways that come together to create a path through America. The only sector where this union has not been possible is a journey of almost 90 km through the jungle between Panama and Colombia. When that sector is united then the three Americas will be united by a single route. Why isn't it complete yet? Well, there are environmental issues (mainly from Panama) and fears that foot and mouth disease (a disease of cattle) will reach North America.

Pan-American through Buenos Aires

La Pan-American Highway is the route of AmericaIt crosses plains, mountains, forests and jungles and has very popular routes such as the route that connects the United States with the Panama Canal. Do you dare to visit it one day?

It seems to me that it is a great fact in our continent since through it we are connected with many countries, you can see thousands of landscapes, it is a pity that it is not finished but hopefully that will soon be resolved in a way that does not affect the environment.

Since I was young I always liked to travel, and thanks to my work together with my wife I met Argentina from Usuaia to La Quiaca, now that I am about to retire, we are dreaming of touring Central America. I would like to know someone can tell me the pros and cons to make a trip of these in motor home.

With a friend we just arrived from doing Route 40 in Argentina from La Quiaca to Rio Gallegos and we arrived in Ushuaia. Spectacular adventure, we returned to Uruguay for 3 thousand kms in total. Now we face another challenge, which is the Pan-American, of course in sections. I would like to exchange information with the people who made it.
