Banyoles, the largest lake in Spain

Banyoles

At the foot of the Catalan Pyrenees is the largest lake in Spain and the Iberian Peninsula: Banyoles, in the province of Gerona. There we also find one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in our country, ideal to spend a few days in contact with nature.
Although centuries ago the extension and depth of the lake were much greater than they are now, Banyoles continues to occupy a large area (1,18 square kilometers) fed by water from underground aquifers and offering an ideal platform for practicing water sports. especially rowing, and endless recreational activities. The lake itself and the surrounding land also form a nature reserve of great tourist interest.

A curious aspect of Banyoles is that, as it happens with the famous Loch Ness in Scotland, here there is also a legend around a supposed monster that inhabits the bottom of the lake. It is said that it was his own Charlemagne the first to spot it, twelve centuries ago, during an exploration of the area while he was in Girona. To end the beast he requested help from Saint Emeterio, a French monk who managed to hypnotize the dragon with his prayers and prayers, "convincing" him to return to the bottom of the lake and never again disturb the lives of men.
Maybe that's why no one has seen the monster again but if you're curious and want to look for it on your own, we encourage you to visit this beautiful lake. To get there, just follow the C-66 road from Girona, since the town of Banyoles, on the shores of the lake, is only 20 kilometers north of the city.
