Colombian customs

One of the main reasons why traveling is a very interesting experience is the possibility of knowing different customs throughout the world. Also in Colombia, where depending on the regions (Caribbean, Pacific, Los Llanos, Los Andes and Amazonía) each community preserves its traditions from generation to generation. However, there are also customs that are common to all Colombians. We review some of them, below.

Colombia is optimistic

Colombia is one of the happiest and optimistic countries in the world so it is not surprising that Colombians are characterized by being outgoing and cheerful people who love fun and good conversation. The enjoyment of life is easily appreciated in the predisposition to party that they have at any time.

To the rich arepa!

This typical Colombian dish is consumed at any time of the day and in each region of the country it is made in one way, although they all share the basics: corn.

The Colombian coast has a very unique arepa, the egg one. Through a skillful and delicate preparation, a crunchy fried corn dough filled with boiled egg is achieved. Delicious! For their part, the Paisas cook the best-known arepa: made of flat, white corn that can be accompanied by any ingredient (cheese, chorizo, scrambled eggs, beans…). The arepa de choclo made with sweeter corn and served with fresh cheese and butter is also very popular.

However, the most peculiar arepa is the santandereana which is prepared with wood ash dissolved in water, yellow corn, yucca or chopped pork rinds. But there are many others, an endless list so it is best that you try them.

Red

In Colombia, wherever you go, you will find arepas and tinto (or a cup of black coffee). And it is that the American country is the fourth producer of coffee in the world and the first when we talk about the softness of the bean.

A package of authentic Colombian coffee can be the best souvenir you can take from Colombia. Every time you pour yourself a cup, you will smell its delicious aroma.

Christmas

Christmas is one of the festivities that is celebrated with the greatest enthusiasm in Colombia. Since November 16, all houses, shops and offices are decked out to begin the celebration of the novena. It is customary in Colombia to remember the nine days of the journey of Mary and Joseph before the birth of Jesus with Christmas carols, custards and donuts. And why not? Also with a rumbita with brandy.

Another of the traditions of Colombia on these dates is that the gifts are brought by the Child God for the children on the night of December 24 and not Santa Claus as in other countries.

On the other hand, cities turn on beautiful lamps with different decorative motifs and even compete for prizes. This has even become a tourist attraction.

Candle Day

Colombia defines itself as a secular state but in practice it is a very Catholic country whose festivities revolve around this faith, such as the Day of the Candles, when the whole country lights candles and lanterns in honor of the Immaculate Conception at dawn from December 7 to 8.

Somehow, this celebration marks the beginning of the Christmas season and many celebrate the event with a good party.

Something to celebrate?

In Colombia, any excuse is good to get together with friends or family and dance until dawn with a glass of brandy in hand. It is a highly appreciated anise liqueur in the country that is served in shots and is usually accompanied by a glass of ice water in case the first drinks turn out to be strong. Then the rest are no longer noticeable.

And what would a party be without music? Colombians love to entertain them with rumba, salsa, reggaeton, cumbia, vallenato and any other rhythm that can be danced to have a great time.

National sport

Just as soccer raises passions being the king sport in many countries, in Colombia cycling is the national sport when Colombian cyclists travel the roads of the world. Whether on the occasion of the Giro, the Tour or the Vuelta, the country comes to a standstill.

Speaking of national sports, shuffleboard is a very important activity for Colombians. It consists of throwing the yew into a bowl in which the gunpowder wicks are placed at a considerable distance. The winner is the participant who breaks the greatest number of highlights and completes the first 27 points.

Did you know these customs of Colombia? Which of them have you found the most curious? Are there others you want to share?
