Niagara Falls

Creating a natural border between the United States and Canada, Niagara Falls is a natural spectacle composed of three waterfalls in which the water falls between 50 and 60 meters to the delight of visitors that every year they come to this place to surrender to the beauty of nature.

It is not the widest waterfall in the world, nor the highest or mighty but in 1953, the movie Niagara starring Marilyn Monroe popularized this place among the general public, which contributed to making them an important tourist destination worldwide.

Where they are located?

Niagara Falls is located in the northeast of the American continent between the United States and Canada. The closest cities are St. Catharines (Canada) and Buffalo (United States) but it is also possible to get there from two nearby metropolises such as New York (650 kilometers) Toronto (only 130 kilometers).

What are Niagara Falls like?

Niagara Falls is divided into three waterfalls: Horseshoe Fall (the largest of all and in Canadian territory), American Fall (medium-sized and in the United States) and Bridal Vail Fall (smaller and on American soil).

The best views that you always see in all the photos are obtained from the Canadian side, although if you can, the best advice is that you enjoy them from both countries. Towns full of hotels, restaurants and casinos sprang up on both sides of the border with the name of Niagara Falls.

The Canadian side

The Canadian town, in the Ontario region, receives the nickname of "Las Vegas" due to its multiple leisure centers and casinos but also has other outstanding spaces such as the Bird Kingdom ornithological park, one of the largest in the world with 350 species of different birds, and Queen Victoria Park which is famous for the floral compositions made with daffodils and roses that decorate the grass.

The American side

The American Niagara Falls is smaller than its neighbor to the north but it also has several parks where you can discover the typical flora of the place. In addition, during winter weekends and almost every summer afternoon at 22 pm a fireworks display is held at the falls. A fascinating spectacle! The best places to observe them are the Rainbow Bridge and Prospect Point.

What to do in Niagara Falls?

See the falls by boat

Although contemplating the falls from one of the many viewpoints in the area is an unforgettable experience in itself, seeing them on a boat from below is even more so. On both the Canadian and American sides, there are small cruises that take visitors aboard a boat directly to the falls to enjoy an authentic natural spectacle as close as possible.

The Whirlpool Aero Car Cable Car

This historic cable car has been crossing the rapids of the Niagara River since 1916. The Whirlpool Aero Car was designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo and offers unobstructed views of Niagara Falls as you ride in a metal cabin suspended from cables. As a curiosity, although the activity begins and ends on Canadian soil, the cable car crosses the border between the two countries four times on each ride.

Skylon Tower

Another way to enjoy Niagara Falls from above is Skylon Tower, an immense 160-meter tower that was inaugurated in 1965 and offers 360-degree views. From there you can not only see the falls but also the silhouette of the cities of Toronto and Buffalo in the distance. At the top of the tower there is a viewpoint and two revolving restaurants.

Colored lights

As we said before, there are nights of the year when Niagara Falls are illuminated with different colors at dusk to increase their spectacularity.

Niagara on the lake

If the lights of the casinos in Niagara Falls town are not attractive enough, we recommend that you take a walk through a much more authentic and picturesque place: Niagara on the Lake. It is a town on the shore of Lake Ontario 25 kilometers by car from Niagara Falls that stands out for its own wine cellars, the quiet atmosphere of its streets, good restaurants and its charming houses.
