Altos del Chavon

Another of the most recommended excursions in Punta Cana is the visit to the Altos del Chavón, an old Mediterranean style villa built on the heights of one of the banks of the Chavón river. It is located close to the tourist complex House (The Roman) and about 95 km. from Santo Domingo.

Altos del Chavón groups together a space of interest with different functions, such as Cultural Center with various art galleries (City of Artists), Pre-Columbian Archaeological Museum, a variety of shops and restaurants and the impressive Amphitheater with capacity for 5 thousand people. Despite its old style, its construction is recent. _Data from 1976, when a powerful American magnate entrusted its construction to the Italian architect Roberto Cup, according to rumors in commemoration of his daughter's birthday.

Its architecture evokes the appearance of a medieval Italian village and this is faithfully reflected in its cobbled streets, its stone facades that create an environment of remarkable beauty and charm. The wild and natural panorama that offers its surroundings next to the Chavón river, was the setting chosen for the filming of several famous films, such as Rambo II and Apocalipse Now. As a counterpoint, in the nearby residential area several famous people have their mansions such as Julio Iglesias, Shakira and Sharon Stone.
