The route through the stages of Game of Thrones in Spain

The television series, so fashionable in recent times, have become the best tourist advertisement for many towns and countries. The climate, the great variety of landscapes and the rich historical-artistic heritage of Spain have attracted the filming of numerous international productions that have made some of the locations of these films famous. The last of them is 'Game of Thrones'.

On the occasion of the filming of the fifth season, the producers set their sights on our country and since then they have continued to come to Spain to shoot the subsequent installments. They are currently recording the seventh season in places as diverse as the Basque Country or Cáceres.

We review all the locations for those who want to make a Game of Thrones route through Spain, touring our country and the places where some of the most important events of the series have occurred.

Andalusia

Sevilla

Seville was the place chosen to recreate Dorne, one of the most enigmatic kingdoms in the 'Game of Thrones' universe. The Real Alcázar of the Seville capital was used to recreate the Jardines del Agua, a residence for the rest of the Martell family, the rulers of the kingdom.

The Real Alcázar of Seville was ordered to be built as a palace-fortress by Abd Al Raman III during the high Middle Ages. Today it continues to be used as a place of accommodation, especially by members of the Spanish Royal House. This architectural complex is surrounded by walls and its ornamentation stands out for its various architectural styles such as Islamic, Mudejar, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.

The Osuna bullring was also the scene of the series and became the Merereen Coliseum, a slave city of Essos that Queen Daenerys Targaryen liberates with the help of her dragons. In its sands is where Khaleesi was ambushed by the Sons of the Harpy, contrary to his policies and the abolition of slavery.

This year Santiponce is another of the locations where it has been filmed. This town near Seville is known for the ruins of the Roman city of Itálica but it is not yet known which scene is going to be recreated there. However, it is rumored that it will be an epic encounter between the main characters.

Cordova

In the fifth season, fans of the series were able to observe how the Roman bridge of Córdoba became the long bridge of the city of Volantis, a city of Essos. At the end of November, the Game of Thrones team filmed in the XNUMXth century castle of Almodóvar del Río, a town near Córdoba.

Castilla La Mancha

Guadalajara

Zafra Castle, near Guadalajara, was the scene of one of the most important moments in the history of Game of Thrones. The fortress became Dorne's Tower of Joy, where one of the most important theories of the saga was finally confirmed.

The producers of the series discovered the Castillo de Zafra through the Internet. When they visited it, they also fell in love with the landscape of the Sierra de Caldereros that surrounds it as it was the perfect place to recreate the desert Dorne.

Valencian Community

Peñíscola

Its famous castle has served to recreate some streets and gardens of Meereen, the city in which Daenerys Targaryen has installed her court with no few problems. Before the series, Peñíscola was a well-known beach destination but as a result of its appearance in Game of Thrones, visits have multiplied according to local merchants.

For several weeks the castle of Beneficto XIII, “Papa Luna” and the old part of the city have been the city of Meereen. In fact, from the medieval wall of the Plaza de Santa María, we could see the shields of the Targeryen house.

Catalonia

Barcelona

The Castle of Santa Florentina de Canet de Mar, a town near Barcelona, was the scene of the reunion of Sam, Jon Snow's inseparable friend in the Night's Watch, with his family in the fortress of Casa Tarly in Colina Cuervo.

It is a medieval fortification from the XNUMXth century that is built on an old Roman villa. Currently, the castle serves as a private home, although its museum which is open to the public can be visited.

Gerona

Gerona served to recreate Braavos, a very important city in Essos where some of the plots of Arya Stark and King's Landing take place. Its streets, the Pujada de Sant Domenech and its Cathedral were the scene of several high points of the sixth season of the series.

Royal bardenas

Navarre

The Natural Park of the Bárdenas Reales is the enclave that houses in fiction a large Dothraki camp where Daenerys is taken prisoner. It is a peculiar semi-desert landscape with a lunar appearance and of enormous beauty recognized as a World Biosphere Reserve, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. Most hikers and adventure seekers walk, bike or even horseback through its more than 42.000 hectares of desert plains, lonely hills and clay soils.

the Basque Country

Guipúzcoa

The landscape of Itzurun Beach in Zumaia is another of the scenarios where the team of the successful series has moved to shoot some scenes corresponding to the seventh season. At the moment it is unknown to which place in Poniente the Basque coast will be related.

Biscay

For its part, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, in Bermeo, also hosted the filming of the series. As in Zumaia, it is too early to know what scenes have been shot since they correspond to the last unreleased season of the series.

It turns out that they have been shooting the series in the province of Cáceres for longer than anywhere in Spain and you systematically forget to include it in the list, and I systematically say because it is not by chance, it is not the first list that comes out in 2016 that coincidentally he also omits it.
