Huelva, step by step (II)

Huelva-Cathedral-La-Merced

Huelva, although it is a fairly old city (the oldest in Andalusia together with Cádiz), is of a very "new construction", this means that it is in full and continuous change and is currently one of the most modern, given the amount of works of new construction presenting.

As you already saw, there is a main article from Huelva, where I recommended 5 corners of the Huelva capital. You can read this here, in this link. Today we continue to recommend you 5 other wonderful corners of this beautiful city. Are you staying to discover it?

La Merced Cathedral

The Cathedral of La Merced, whose execution period is estimated y entre 1605 1615, suffered, like most of the buildings in Huelva, severe damage in 1755 due to the Lisbon earthquake, requiring reforms that lasted until the twentieth century. Next to it is currently the Faculty of Business Sciences, which in the past was a hospital. Both the Cathedral and the faculty are located front by front of a popular square that bears the same name as its Cathedral, Plaza de la Merced, which has also undergone several renovations over time. Currently, this square has become a meeting point during the Ribbon festivities, hosting concerts and other events and an area very frequented especially by young people on the most significant days of Christmas.

Monument to the Discovering Faith

The Monument to the Discovery Faith is located in the Tip of the Sebo, one of the most emblematic corners of the Andalusian city. This monument is the work of the American sculptor Gertrude V. Withney, and was inaugurated in 1929. It represents a recognition of the sailors who made it possible for Christopher Columbus to arrive in Las Americas in 1492.

It has Meters 37 and it was built with white stone from the Niebla quarry. The pedestal is adorned with bas-reliefs of the Aztec, Inca, Mayan and Christian cultures. And inside, which is accessed through a door in the front, we can find the sculpture of the Catholic Monarchs seated.

Huelva-marshes

To speak of Huelva is to speak of its marsh. This Andalusian city cannot be mentioned without naming the marsh that bathes it in its description.

The islands that this geographical accident forms are known to all Huelva residents and some give their names to numerous commercial establishments: Saltés, Bacuta, Enmedio, Burro, Liebre ... After the construction of a wooden walkFrom the Sifón Bridge to the towns of Aljaraque, Punta Umbría or La Bota, thousands of people cross this wonderful enclave of our city on foot or by bicycle.

In it are also the salinas, Tharsis Pier (located on the other side of the estuary) and the Anastasio Senra Visitor Center which stands out for its viewpoint and for being an extraordinary place to admire the birds that stop in our marshes on their trips from Africa to Europe and vice versa, especially its beautiful flamingos.

Las Monjas Square

Huelva-square-of-the-nuns

This square is like the nerve center of the city. Some of the main streets of the city center reach it, such as Gran Vía, Tres de Agosto, Vázquez López or Méndez Núñez. Throughout its history it has undergone numerous renovations. The fountain and temple They have been protagonists for many years together with the ancient Agustinas Convent, but in recent years the presence of the monument to Christopher Columbus, made by the image maker Elías Rodríguez Picón (Rociana del Condado) and the pedestrianization of the surroundings of the square have endowed with a special charm and is the target of many more photographs taken by tourists but also by people from Huelva on foot.

It is rare to see this empty square… There are always people in it: older people reading their newspapers sitting on the wooden benches, children playing ball, workers coming and going to their jobs, and so on. By the way, and as a personal recommendation, if you step on this square, it is almost mandatory to order a one euro hamburger at one of the kiosks in the place ... They are delicious!

Andalusia Avenue

If you want to see one zone arrives of people and acclimated (doing sports, children playing, skating area, cafes and popular bars) you must go through Avenida de Andalucía. This divides the city into north and south from the "Fountain of the Firemen" until "Monument to Soccer" at the entrance to Huelva. It is the first area you will see if you arrive from Seville.

It is a central area with roads going both ways on the sides and is full of playgrounds, garden areas, cafeterias, squares and gazebos. In it pWe can distinguish two phases: the old one, from the Fire Station to the "Monument to The Discoverers", and the new one, from here to the roundabout of the "Monument to Soccer", which had its origin in the construction of the V Centenario highway on the occasion of the Expo '92 Olympic Games.

If you want to know which of them you like the most, you will have to step on their paths ...
